FAQ

QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS

We’ve collated all the questions sent in about GameHack into this handy list!

Q: What is the TIGA GameHack?

A: It’s an overnight hackathon and it’s all about making games! Big, small, native, web, single or multiplayer, we think that together we can make something amazing.

This year is even more special than the last. Thanks to our brilliant partners, Abertay University in Dundee, there will be a satellite TIGA GameHack taking place with our super talented friends in Scotland – same time, same categories, and same 24-hour pressure!

We are really lucky to have some incredible sponsors this year. Thanks so much to our Gold sponsors ARM and PlayJam, Bronze sponsor BlackBerry, snacks sponsor Unity Technologies and prize sponsors; Pinewood Studios and Centroid.

TIGA GameHack is also supporting SpecialEffect, a UK based charity which uses video games and technology to enhance the quality of life of people with disabilities.

Q: Where is the GameHack?

A: This year, GameHack takes place in London and Dundee at the same time. Both are overnight venues – so bring your sleeping bag!

London venue:

Pinewood Studios, Pinewood Road, Iver Heath, Iver, Buckinghamshire SL0 0NH

Dundee venue:
The Centre for Excellence, Institute of Media, Arts and Computer Games (Level 2 of Kydd building), University of Abertay Dundee, Bell Street, Dundee DD1 1HG.

Q: What is the cost of attending the GameHack?

A: £5 charitable donation to our chosen UK charity, SpecialEffect.

Q: Who owns the IP of things made at GameHack?

A: The aim of GameHack is to create something amazing, have fun & show off your skills! You make it, you own it.

Q: How do I get to the venue?

A: Bus, train or car are normally the best ways. If you are driving to GameHack and you have a free sea, add your journey on GoCarShare to help other GameHackers get to the event!

Q: Is there parking at the venue and how much does it cost?

A: Parking is free, if you do need parking please email nisha@tiga.org who will arrange a pass for you.

Q: Can I bring a desktop computer?

A: Yes!

Q: Will we have desks?

A: Yes!

Q: Will there be chairs?

A: Yes!

Q: Can we use existing assets?

A: These are fine within reason however we want people to enter into the spirit of the event and create something awesome during it.

At the same time we understand that creating everything from scratch is a challenge, so if you have some sound effects, artwork or code that you want to expand or re use that is ok, within reason.

Q: What are the rules?

A: For the event the rules are simple:

  • Treat the space and each other with respect
  • Do not wonder around the venue unless informed by a member of GameHack or security
  • Do not steal other peoples ideas or code

For catagories, please refer to the individual listings which will cover these in detail.

Q: How can I register a team of people?

A: Via our eventbrite page and choose the number of tickets you require for your team and complete the registration process.

Q: I am registering as an individual, how will team formation work on the day of GameHack?

A: After the opening talks we’ll have an area dedicated to helping you find your team.

Q: What is the maximum number in a team?

A: There is no limit to the size of the team but Sponsors may only have a limited number of prizes to give away.

Q: Do you supply computers and other hardware?

A: You and your team will need to bring your own Laptops or PCs and anything else you might need for making your game

Q: Where can I register our team name?

A: Please email nisha@tiga.org with your team name.

Q: Will there be network available?

A: Yes, WiFi will be available

Q: Will SDK’s etc be available at the event?

A: Yes but we recommend you download and setup any software you need prior to the event to save you time.

Q: Does food cost and drink cost anything?

A: No, it’s all included

Q: I’m not sure which category I am going to enter into, when do I need to make this decision?

A: Not until the day if you need to. Each category sponsor will be there on the day to talk through the category and offer words of advice and tech support.

Q: Is there a limit to the number of categories I can enter?

A: No, but we recommend you don’t go overboard as it may put a lot of extra pressure on you and your team, remember this is supposed to be fun!

Q: What are the criteria for the ‘special prizes’ as there doesn’t seem to be much information – how can I enter these?

A: ‘Special prizes’ will be additional prizes awarded to teams chosen by the sponsors themselves.
